| Message | I had this rebuild done starting in 2006 and going into 2007, so its right in the time frame you said it was common to do this. Also yes, it was tuned for top end power as I am now realizing this the hard way (no low-end torque at ALL). I would have done cam gears and much more but the guidelines I gave them were "a rock solid reliable car I can drive to work every day for the next 10 years, within the budget I can afford." I wasnt looking for a hot rod at the time, just a bulletproof engine that I wouldnt have to pay to pull out again when I decided to add more stuff to it later. I told them to upgrade anything that would require an engine pull to change later. I was tight on cash, parents took out an equity loan to help me get the car rebuilt when they really needed the money more. It had been sitting in my driveway for a year just sucking up monthy payments due to shady work and an uneducated owner. Last mechanic I took it too for a simple injector replacment and ECU upgrade (had a stock injector fail) charged me $2500, gave it back to me blowing smoke like a fog machine out the exhaust telling me I need to invest in a stand alone fuel management system to make the 555cc's work with my setup and that it wasn't his fault the car isn't running right. I would have fought him on it but I was dumb, beleived he might be right, and he threatened to keep my car if I didn't pay. I never went back, and the car sat. Then when I my parents offered to help (I had been sharing a car with them for 6 months now and we all work full time.) we took it to Alamo and they found no compression in 2 cyl's (due to first mechanic reving the car excessively with leaking injectors) and pinched o-rings when they took the motor apart. So its been a hell of an ordeal with this Z but heck I plan to be buried in it ha! Now I am on my own and I have a LITTLE extra cash to throw at it. So I am looking into all the things I have just lived with the last few years and getting the car up to par. After the ~$30,000 I have invested thus far and the 8 years I have owned it, I am starting to learn enough to make educated choices on what to do and what needs to be done.
